Stirring the Alphabet Soup: Celebrating and Exploring Community

Over the 2008-2009 academic year, UVic Pride went through an intensive revisoning process. We noticed that finding words for the people and groups we want to support was challenging and often lead to conflict. This made us consider whom we were really intending to support and how they were connected. The reality is that the queer community is immensely diverse and finding common ground amongst everyone is near impossible. We decided that if we were awarded with the conference, we wanted to explore this idea further.

The first round of workshops will discuss some of the lesser-known identities that we include in the term “queer.” Each of us comes to the community with our own experiences and sense of identity, and many of us never learn about others. We hope that these workshops will be a fun and valuable opportunity to learn about a topic you know little about.

The second round of workshops will explore the community and culture we do share. This will provide a foundation on which that common ground can be found and built. With a solid sense of community to stand on, we can reach out to even more diverse groups.
